History of the church
During
the early nineteenth century those who lived in the area of Cymmer and Porth
were situated in the Parish of Llantrisant. They would have had to travel
to Llanwonno, Ystradyfodwyg and Llantrisant for their Worship.
In 1874 a committee was formed un the Parish of Llantrisant to consider whether to build a church in Cymmer. It was then settled that a church would be built in Cymmer, and the foundation stone was laid by Archdeacon of Llandaff on the 14th June 1888.
The church of St John the Evangelist was consecrated by the Lord Bishop of Llandaff, the Right Rev. Richard Lewis, on the 5th June 1889 and it is now well over 110 years old. Major restoration work has been carried out in recent years inside the church. The new light wood furniture has given it a very modern lift. Click HERE for interior Pictures.
