Open Day 2009 - 120th Annivesary of St John's Church

On 6th June, St. John's Church Cymmer celebrated 120 years and an Open Day was held for the local community.

The Rhondda Chronicle published an article on 7th June 1889 headed "Church Work in the Rhondda: Consecration of a new church at Cymmer"

Many displays were set up to includes old maps of the area, past and present vicars, Baptism and Wedding Photos, Rhondda Chronicle article from 1889, Clergy robes, Mothers' Union, a slide show and many more. Even a cup from St John's Hall 1916 was on display. This was found in Cardiff and we are seeking information about this cup and it's inscription. The photo of the cup is further down this page. A celebration lunch was held in the hall after Sunday's service and was greatly enjoyed by all who came. A cake with a picture of St John's on it was also shared out.

Celebrations further continued on Monday 8th June with a concert for the the Mothers' Union who celebrated 105 years. Each member was awarded a certificate and enjoyed a service with a meal afterwards. A splendid cake was specially prepared.
