The Parish of Porth Newydd

Lenten Lunches in the Parish of Cymmer and Porth

Lenten Lunches were served every Friday in the Parish of Cymmer and Porth during Lent (Easter 2006).

The tradition is now in it's eigth year at St. John's and St. Luke's Church Halls, with the proceeds going to charity.

This year (2006) the chosen charity was the Belarus Aid for Children, Cardiff Undergraduate Programme (BAC-CUP). The funds will support students who regularly visit and work in Minsk. They use the money to buy wheelchairs and pushchairs for the children and young people there.

Audrey Morgan of St John's said "We want to support their efforts and invite others to join us. Lent is traditionally a time of self-denial in the Christian calendar. The Lunches are intended to be part of the tradition and will also help other less fortunate than ourselves."

The lunches of soup with bread, followed by Tea and Coffee were just £1.50.

Intotal £466 was raised and presented to Catherine Thomas on behalf of Belarussian Aid to Children. The charity's Co-Ordinator Miss Thomas said the money will be used to buy pushchairs.
