Next Cafe Church: Alternativity

Tired of the Christmas rush? Worn down by the credit crunch? Wishing Christmas was over already? Then Alternativity could be just the thing for you. That is the title of this month's Sacred Space @ Porth Plaza, cafe style worship at the Plaza, Pontypridd Road, Porth (next door to the library) on Sunday 21st December at 7.30-8.30pm. Seasonal refreshments will be served throughout the evening, and people of all ages are welcome to come and join in the various activities which will help to draw us in to the nativity story and the true spirit of Christmas. Imagine how it would have felt to go back to your home town for the census. Help to make a cradle for baby Jesus. Sing some carols and eat some mince pies. Everyone is welcome - whether or not you normally attend church at Christmas.

Café church arrives in the Rhondda

“When is a church not a church?” “When it is café church”.  A new kind of church arrives in the Rhondda in October. Sacred Space @ Porth Plaza is a café church – a church where you can worship and drink coffee at the same time! A church where instead of being preached at you can talk about deep matters of faith – or watch a film – or write a letter in support of a cause. A church where the newspapers will be open, and Christian faith will be open to the world. The first meeting, entitled Aspects of Love, is on Sunday 19th October at 7.30pm in the Porth Plaza , Pontypridd Road (next to Porth Library).
This new venture has been started by the Porth Newydd parish and Porth United Reformed Church. Porth Newydd vicar, Fr Chris Coles, said “Café church is a new way of exploring faith and spirituality in a relaxed atmosphere. We hope that it will appeal to some regular churchgoers who want something different, but also to people who find hard pews and formal worship rather off-putting. You don’t even have to call yourself a Christian to come along and join in.”
United Reformed Church minister Gethin Rhys has visited café churches elsewhere in Britain , and believes the time has come to try it out in the Rhondda . “We all enjoy a coffee in a coffee shop, and many of us enjoy talking about the important things in life. This is a chance to do both at the same time. You will not be preached at or got at, but you will have the chance to join in as much or as little as you want. We will also watch some film clips, listen to music – and eat cake!”
Chris Coles adds, “Sacred Space will be open on the third Sunday evening of each month in the Plaza. Admission is free, and we can promise you an enjoyable evening.”
